Mental Capacity Act (MCA) Training Courses

Koha Training and Development provides a variety of courses covering all aspects of the Mental Capacity Act . Courses can be tailored to suit the specific needs of your service and delivered at:

  • Introductory level
  • Intermediate level

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course participants will:

  • Understand the 5 statutory principles of the MCA.
  • Be able to assess capacity using the 2 stage assessment, as detailed in the MCA.
  • Understand the Best Interests principle and know when and how to apply the statutory best interests checklist.
  • Appreciate the scope and limitations of section 5 (protection from liability for those providing care/treatment).
  • Be familiar with the role of the IMCA and know when a statutory requirement exists to instruct an IMCA.
  • Understand what makes an Advance Decision valid and applicable.
  • Have an awareness of the role of a Lasting Power of Attorney & Deputies, their rights and responsibilities.
  • Understand the role of the Court of Protection and the Office of the Public Guardian.
